Niger Delta activist, Mr. Famous Daunemigha, has faulted recent comments ascribed to the leader of Niger Delta People Volunteers Force, Alhaji Muhajideen Dokubo-Asari, allegedly inciting youths in the region against the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Dokubo-Asari was alleged to have called for the resumption of militant activities against the backdrop of Buhari’s speech that the amnesty programme for former Niger Delta militants would terminate in December 2015.
He noted that the ex-militants in the region had embraced the new leadership and also expressed their willingness to work with him.
Daunemigha, who is the former Vice-President of Ijaw Youths Council Worldwide when Dokubo was the President of IYC, said his recent comment would amount to nothing as the Niger Delta region could no longer be a battleground for his selfish benefits.
Speaking on the deadline for amnesty programme with journalists in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, on Monday, the former youth leader said former President Goodluck Jonathan was president for six years but could not review the terminal date of the amnesty programme.
He added that the IYC and Ijaw National Congress could not compel their son to extend the terminal date of December 2015.
According to him, the agitation for the betterment of the Niger Delta region has gone beyond physical confrontation and more of an intellectual engagement.
Daunemigha, who was the Congress for Progressive Change governorship candidate in 2011 general election in Bayelsa State, said Asari-Dokubo should accept the realities on the ground after Jonathan conceded defeat and congratulated Buhari after the Presidential election.
“I expect that the likes of (Dokubo) Asari to follow the example and accept the realities on the ground instead of mourning more than the bereaved,” he stated.
He warned that youths in the Niger Delta region should not make themselves vulnerable to the antics of the former militant leader by calling for the resumption of militancy in the region.
He, however, called on all well-meaning Ijaw elders and youths to give their support and encourage Buhari as he meant well for the region.
